The city council has declared 2023 the “Year of the Bicycle” and plans to set up an activity program to promote the use of the bicycle as a part of the sustainable urban model. This is an effort to encourage its use to continue contributing to a sustainable city and the promotion of this sport.

In this way, different policies and actions will be carried out around this mode of transportation from all angles, from daily mobility or bicycle tourism to its health benefits, including recreational and sports use, and the business development of the sector. Therefore, the city council is planning a program of activities focused on cycling for the coming year.

The mayor for socio-cultural affairs emphasized the importance of the bicycle as a fundamental part of improving the quality of life of citizens since the bicycle is not only a means of transportation, but its use adds value to society in different dimensions: mobility, health, environment, livability, and conviviality. It is also a benefit not only for users of this type of transportation but also for the rest of the public, as it frees up space and reduces air pollution and noise emissions.

Over the past decade, the city government has developed a model of a sustainable and livable city that is committed to the quality of life and well-being of citizens. These actions include the car-free or traffic-restricted construction of more than 130 streets under the “Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol” project, as well as the groundbreaking project of urban sustainability that opens the city to the sea and creates one of the best promenades on the Spanish coast. Additionally, the city has created a network of bike paths that now cover more than 8 kilometers, and a coastal corridor, which is 90% complete after connecting almost 20 of the 23 kilometers of coastline in the city.
